Mayor visits Language Cafe

LC Mayor 2

Last Wednesday Harrow’s Mayor, Krishna Suresh, visited The Language Café who meet on a weekly basis at the Grange Farm Centre in Osmond Close, South Harrow. The eleven women at the meeting, originally from eight different countries, introduced themselves to the mayor in turn. They were delighted that the mayor wore his ceremonial robes which he talked about, and he was also asked questions about how he became involved in politics and his current role as mayor. He explained to them how his two chosen charities – Harrow Association for Disabled People and Harrow Young Musicians – are close to his heart for family reasons. The women enjoyed his visit and several stayed on to talk to him at the end of the session. They also presented the mayor with a birthday card, signed by all of them in their own first languages.

The ‘Language Café’ is run by volunteers from Christ Church Roxeth. It meets on Wednesday afternoons during term time and is free. Its aim is to help women who have some knowledge of English to become more confident when speaking the language.
